Answers to some Questions about JFK. And good questions too!

Yesterday one of the readers of GEopolar wrote a long post asking," What was so great about JFK?"

Let's face the facts, death always produces memories that are larger in death than in life. EVen the worst person in the world sometimes gets a break when they leave for the great beyond.

But, I wanted to answer some of his questions, because unlike him, I was alive when Kennedy was president and when he was assasinated. His questions were not taken personally. Although, I loved Kennedy, and the eloquence of his life and words, I am very aware of the frailties of the man. So, here are answers about Kennedy, as I knew them, or experienced them.

He brought up some general ideas and questions.1) Except for the Cuban Missile Crisis, what did he do that was so great?

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a big "except for" Having nuclear missiles actually pointed at the shores of America? Kinda scarey. And Kennedy, and the people of his administration, through diplomacy and backchannels diffused the situation. Read "Thirteen Days" This is a book by Robert F. Kennedy talking about those days.

Did JFK get us into Vietnam? No, he didn't take us into Vietnam initially, but did begin our escalation into Vietnam, and like the writer of the deleted post, I, too do not blame Johnson, or even the country's favorite punching bag, before Bush, NIxon, for the Vietnam War. And as a person, who had friends go to that war by no choice of their own (drafted) I do know it was the biggest tragedy of the 20th century. When 58,000 young people die in a war that has no real bearing in America and they are forced to go? You would have thought our "leaders" would have learned.

JFK was a known womanizer. Yes, he was. And I also agree with the writer of the post. That was the worst part of the man. He could have done much better, and he should have. I don't think anyone can excuse that kind of behavior.

The writer also asked if Kennedy had passed any Civil Rights legislation. No, he didn't, he didn't have much time to. But, he did step forward in important and effective ways in that regard. Listen to his Civil Rights Speech on American Rhetoric online.

Lastly, the writer said, "So he was charismatic and extremely good looking, what is that worth?" Or something to that effect.

My answer to that is, ask all of those who are supporting Obama.

More about Vietnam

JFK Civil Rights speech, one of the top 100 speeches of all time.

i'm sorry it's taken me so long to drop in and say thank you for commenting on my blog.. but i'm glad i picked today.

i was too young to remember jfk.. but i have read several books about him and to me.. he was a motivator. for all the faults he may have had.. he seemed (or it seemed to me from reading) that he had the ability to motivate people to want to do better for this country... although that doesn't seem like such a feat.. i think it is just as important as being able to handle major crisis.

wonderful blog...

Hahahahaaa! You got me! I thought I could snake my way out of it before you read it by deleting it... I should have known you were too smart for that (o:

Yes, that was me who posted that. Afterward, I looked up on en.wikipedia and saw that vietnam was launched in 1959, so it wasn't Kennedy's war... I need to research before I speak (o:
And I'm probably more flawed than JFK ever was..

OH MY GOSH!!!

If someone posted on my blog (maybe I should do this anonom...) "what's so great about JFK?", I would go frickin' nuts!

Are you kidding me??

My "forensic profile" (and yes, I understand I'm using the word FORENSIC): A native born Southerner - in their 50's or 60's...die hard Republican, thinks Reagan was the best prez ever...probably a male, most definitely married (or widowed), and is in the 23% of the population that thinks Geo. Bush is doing a "satisfactory" job.

Yeah, I work with the other person in the country who voted "yes" when asked that Bush is doing a "satisfactory" job, so we've just revealed BOTH of them!

(wink) How about that? A slam to your poster, and at Bush, all in a few sentences? :-)

Ouch!

.... although, I have to admit, after the "are you kidding me??" part, the rest of your incoherent ramblings made absolutely NO sense whatsoever.. but at least you got to "slam" someone. Congrats. Have a nice day.

In her sleep. Or passed out...

I doubt it. I can tell.

Well, I notice that Dick and Snowy are ganging up on KS! WE all can have our own opinions-but that is what is best about blogging- there is room for dissent.

Unlike today, where sometimes dissent is seen as being unpatriotic!

Oh I'm just kidding, guys. I'm sure KS is a nice person. Let me set a few things straight, though:

1. I am not in my 50's or 60's.
2. True, I am a registered Republican, but this election I am planning on voting for Obama should he receive the nomination. I have extremely liberal viewpoints, except that I'm pro-life, not pro-choice.
3. I believe Reagan was not the best president we ever had, but Abraham Lincoln because he set an oppressed people free.
4. I did not vote for Mister Bush these last 2 elections. I didn't vote for anyone because I didn't like any of the candidates.
5. I was born and raised in New England. I did live in Florida for a few years, because that was the only place I could afford a house at the time. I now live in upstate New York.
6. I was never married, nor do I intend to be as I don't "swing that way" (if you catch my drift)..

I don't mind criticism, as long as the facts are straight, and as long as it's not delivered with barbed, sarcastic meanness. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, no matter if we agree with them on issues or not.

... I don't know, I still have my doubts...

I think anyone who has been blogging around Dick Small for any "length" of time knows how great he is. We all have our own beliefs and can all questions things. That's why I went into all of these things about JFK. Because I thought it would be a good platform for debate.

Other than the part of Obama, I am pretty in the same lane as Dick, but as he also said we all can say what we wanna say.

Thanks Smythe! You're THE most beautiful woman on the planet!

Yeah, anyone can tell that by my photo (wink)
